The Cultural Council for Monterey County http://www.culturalmonterey.org The Cultural Council for Monterey County (CCMC) promotes and supports education, appreciation and excellence in the arts in Monterey County. CCMC fosters cultural awareness and understanding, helping to provide an array of aesthetic and educational experiences for adults and children. Formed in 1982, it serves as Monterey County's local partner to the California Arts Council. CCMC is not only the link to the state arts council, but it is also the official arts agency for Monterey County. Services offered by the Monterey Bay Chapter include monthly meetings open to the public, featuring presentations about whales, dolphins and related aspects of the marine environment. The Monterey Bay Chapter of the American Cetacean Society normally meets at 7:30 pm on the last Thursday of the month at Hopkins Marine Station in Pacific Grove, California (across from the American Tin Cannery Outlet Stores). These meetings are free and open to the public. Monterey Peninsula Audubon Society http://www.montereyaudubon.org/ Monthly meetings of the Monterey Peninsula Audubon Society are free. Members and non-members are welcome! Meetings are held at the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History, at the corner of Forest and Central in Pacific Grove, second Thursday of the month. Refreshments precede the meeting with a social "1/2 hour" at 7 p.m. The meeting and program begin at 7:30 p.m. The Monterey Institute for Research in Astronomy http://www.mira.org/ MIRA is a non-profit astronomical observatory, founded in 1972 and dedicated to research and education in astronomy. It is the first independent professional observatory founded in the 20th century. The offices, library, and shops are located on the Monterey Peninsula of California. The Institute is currently developing Richard W. Hamming Astronomy Center on the old Ft. Ord site near the new California State campus at Monterey Bay. The Astronomy Center includes a main building, electronics and machine shops, and the Bette M. and William R. Weaver Student Observatory. The Institute operates the Oliver Observing Station atop 5000 foot Chews Ridge. The Station houses a 36-inch reflecting telescope used for astronomical research. Because of the excellent atmospheric conditions in the Santa Lucia Mountains, the first to intercept the smooth airflow from the Pacific Ocean, and the dark skies of the Los Padres National Forest, the observing conditions are among the best measured in the world. Community of Caring believes that helping young people understand values helps them understand choices, and the consequences that result. It is a total approach to impressing on young people the importance of good citizenship and responsibility. The Volunteer Center of Monterey County http://www.yesillhelp.org/ The Volunteer Center of Monterey County was founded as a national organization in April 1971 to serve the community as a clearinghouse that coordinates recruitment and referral of volunteers, matching them with the service needs of local nonprofit agencies. Today, The Volunteer Center of Monterey County continues to serve as a valuable asset by annually connecting over 3,200 volunteers and serving over 450 nonprofit and public agencies. |
